The Fiat Panda is the best-selling vehicle in Portugal in September.
The Portuguese new car market grows 15.6% year-on-year in September to 12,471 sales, tilting the year-to-date total into positive at +1.1% to 113,764 units. Mercedes (+102.3%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year to score its 4th ever monthly win after August 2015, September 2015 and May 2020. It owns a fantastic 11.2% share vs. 7.6% over the first 9 months of 2022. As a result Mercedes climbs to #2 year-to-date. Peugeot (-14.1%) misses out on the positive market and is toppled to #2. It however remains by far the most popular brand year-to-date with 11.2% share. Fiat (+296%) multiplies its September 2021 volume by 4 and surges to #3 with 8% share vs. #11 and 4.3% share so far this year. Opel (+86.1%), Dacia (+65.8%) and Ford (+35.7%) all post very satisfying gains in the remainder of the Top 10, with Kia (+17.5%) also beating the market. Further down, notice Alfa Romeo (+3600%!), Jaguar (+156.3%), Suzuki (+63.2%), Lexus (+52.6%) and Tesla (+42.4%).
Over in the models ranking, the Fiat Panda (+3493.3%) manages a surreal year-on-year lift and is up 19 spots on August to land at a surprise #1 for the month and for the first time in the nameplate history. This is without a doubt the result of a bulk purchase by a rental or lease company as customers aren’t likely to have suddenly fallen in love with the Panda. #1 so far this as it was over the Full Year 2021, the Peugeot 2008 (-49.1%) is hit very hard year-on-year but rallies back up 10 ranks on last month to #2. The Dacia Sandero (+35.8%) outpaces the market to reach #3 and is up to #4 year-to-date. It is followed this month by the Renault Captur (+24.1%) and Clio (-54.2%) showing very different evolutions. The four last models in the Top 10 easily beat the market, with the Peugeot 308 (+345.2%) faring best above the Fiat 500 (+190.5%), Opel Corsa (+156.2%) and Mercedes A-Class (+67.5%).
